HOUSE MOMMSEN

HOUSE SHABANGU

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION: Sheffield Ridge, White River, Mpumalanga

SIZE: 818m2

With this house, the client had a very specific idea in mind. Having spent many holidays abroad, the client wanted a home that would remind him of his travels. The main theme was a Bali-like structure with more modern elements. This resulted in the main roof type being a double-pitched tiled roof, with modern flat concrete roofs connecting the different plan elements. The result is a home with a strong presence that sits on top of a rocky outcrop, nestled into the large, landscaped gardens. Though a large home, the use of large columns and beams helps to balance the scale of the project. This high-end home features double glazing, a full solar system with a backup generator and other modern conveniences. In the living spaces, the large glass sliding doors slide into pockets to offer an unobstructed view of the garden and valley below.

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION: Milkwood Estate, Nelspruit/Mbombela, Mpumalanga

SIZE: 616m2

This is an understated, modern home, focused on privacy and entertainment. The house was designed with the garages as a solid buffer to the social spaces at the other end of the property. Low Pitched roofs help settle it into its surroundings and keep the scale at a human level.

HOUSE THELA

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION: Elawini Estate, Nelspruit/Mbombela, Mpumalanga

SIZE: 532m2

House Thela is a very modern design, with flat concrete roofs, large, glazed openings, and open plan, indoor/outdoor living. The use of raw materials such as wood and off-shutter concrete give it a warm and comfortable feel. The home is complemented with large outdoor entertainment areas and offers a variety of outdoor spaces which are all connected. The design is intended to blur the lines between indoors and outdoors, and this is specifically done to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings.

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION: Elawini Estate, Nelspruit/Mbombela, Mpumalanga

SIZE: 692m2

Here the design fits into its context by adhering to the Estate Guidelines. The height, paint colours and other materials, roof type etc. although dictated by the Estate, as still used to create a unique design solution which meets with the approval of the client. Due to the slope of the stand the home is spread over 3 main floors. This allows for different functions to be grouped together, with the main social spaces fitting into the middle level. As far as possible all spaces enjoy northern light, which is primarily an environmental consideration.

This home is most definitely a statement piece. The client requested a design that would be very modern and slightly unconventional. The stand offered quite a few challenges due to its topography, but this was solved with some innovative engineering solutions that add to the unconventional element of this home. A large retaining wall forms an element which guides one to the entrance which is set almost 2 storeys below the upper natural ground level. Plastered cubes float over outdoor spaces with bold steel elements for support. The home enjoys beautiful views of the koppie adjacent to the stand.

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION: Ndlovumzi Estate, Hoedspruit, Limpopo

SIZE: 527m2

These International clients wanted a design that would shy away from traditional ideas of a home. The brief included a sunken lounge area and a kitchen that serves as the central space of the home. This home does not have a traditional front door, but rather a foyer space which opens up on both sides with sliding folding doors, to allow for maximum airflow, which aids in cooling the house and, creates a shaded transitional space from outside to inside. All the bedrooms and living spaces enjoy a northern orientation and so too a view of the river. Wood cladding and birch wood ceilings allow the interior spaces to connect with the natural environment whilst still providing shelter from the elements. The house is unique and has pushed the boundaries of residential design. The result is a contemporary home which is in balance with its context and celebrates outdoor living. This minimalist design allows for the scenery to take precedence and provides a clean canvas for the owner’s interior style.

The client brief only included an accommodation list. This meant that when it came to the layout type and aesthetics of the home, Co-LAB could develop a more personal style for the project. The result is a very modern design, with a combination of flat concrete roofs and low-pitched mono-pitch roofs. The home makes provision for a secluded Master Suite, with another two bedrooms on the opposite side of the home and a separate guest cottage. The front door of the home is a door in the boundary wall, and a walkway takes on to the outdoor entertainment area before one enters the home through stacking doors. The Master Suite and Living Spaces enjoy views to the North, the East, and the South, making the most of what the location has to offer.

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION: The Aloes, Polokwane, Limpopo

SIZE: 351m2

A more traditional home is created here by using pitched roofs and elements of Facebrick together with Plastered elements. The bold design elements used, give the home a sense of stature within the estate, whilst still integrating into the predominant design philosophy of the estate. In a suburban setting, the home is both spacious and connects well with the outdoor garden spaces, affording comfort and privacy.

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION: Somerset West, Western Cape

The developer’s request was for upmarket, lock-up-and-go, modern, duplex-styled units. Keeping the context in mind, the design employs pitched roofs with white walls and integrates large glazed elements to capitalize on the views offered from the First Floor. The use of glass and steel further serves to attract a younger market of homeowners with this Hi-Tech aesthetic. Wood cladding serves to balance this aesthetic with a more natural aesthetic which is also currently trending. Further adding to the appeal of the development is the attention given to the design of gardens and walkways with ample opportunity for planted elements and lawns all the way around the units. There are also no fences with serve to increase the sense of open space within the development.

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION: The Aloes, Limpopo

The developer’s intention was to provide high-end accommodation at the Ebenezer Dam, specifically for those looking for a permanent holiday home that offers the same comforts as their primary home. The design is compact yet modern, and choosing to go up, not only allows for a more compact footprint but also allows for better views of the dam and surroundings. Dark navy boards add a distinctly nautical feel to the design pallet of these units further reinforcing the sense of relaxation.

The client’s wishes were for a compact and practical which embraces the use of eco-friendly and sustainable design principles and materials. To this end, the design makes use of large, Rammed Earth walls which also create a transition from the entry and street elevation to the inside of the home. The warm colour and texture of these walls are welcoming and grounding. The home is orientated towards the main view, which is to the East. This elevation has large roof overhangs forming a shaded patio for entertainment and this further serves to shade the main living spaces. The design is very modern with a simple mono-pitch roof allowing nature to dominate the landscape. Shutters further enable the owners to manipulate the indoor climate of the home, adding to the eco-friendly nature of the design. The whole structure is designed with a light steel frame technology, serving to reduce the amount of materials needed on site. Cavity sliders allow for complete walls to disappear into the structure, providing a more immersive experience of nature.

Built in a reserve, the design needed to include natural materials and colours, in order to nestle it into its environment. Gum poles and rock cladding, integrate with earth tones and thatch to inform the sense of safari adventure. These natural finishes also help to blend the building into the surroundings so that it is less visually obtrusive. The focus here is, after all, the bush.

The Villas are intended to offer a large number of affordable housing opportunities close to all modern amenities, opportunities which are surprisingly not only modern, but affordable too. Drawing influence from the Bauhaus movement of the 1920s, the design focuses on a simplified aesthetic, with more detail given to the practicality of accommodating many people in close proximity to one another. The clean lines and interconnecting surfaces aim to provide a less busy aesthetic due to the large scale and nearness of neighbouring units. This makes the development more subdued and relaxing. At the same time, this is a bold design choice which is intended to give the development a more specific and one-of-a-kind identity.

SIZE: 795m2 + 515m2

Situated in a security estate in Polokwane this client bought two stands to realize her dream. One stand is intended for a luxury home, and the other is intended for a luxury entertainment space, with a focus on modern living, and the use of modern materials. The design uses textured tile cladding, glass, steel, and concrete to create striking elevations all around. Cascading waterfalls and natural wood cladding serve to create a sense of rest, relaxation, and calm, a kind of oasis away from the busyness of urban lifestyles. All the finishes are high-end, and the scale of this home is rather vast. The design aims to provide a solution that is striking but is also in keeping with neighboring properties.

The developer sort a design that would be simplistic in form, thereby reducing the cost of construction, whilst still offering comfortable and practical modern-day living. The design is, as a result, paired back and uses the front entrance as a focal element. A simplistic Mono-Pitch roof adds to the simplicity. The result is a neat, modern aesthetic, with cleverly planned outdoor spaces which complement the design.
